Tonkawa High School Military Veterans of foreign wars
This site is dedicated to Tonkawa High School students who served in the military. Many came home with PTSD and wounded. Many joined the Guards or Reserves and resumed their lives. Some did not come home at all. The list of World Wars I and II soldiers from Tonkawa is extensive. In every town, officials posted lists on Main Street, and during research in 2012, Mike Schatz found Tonkawa’s original WWI list on the wall of the Tonkawa News. The WWII list surfaced at the Carter museum during a reorganization of materials when the museum expanded. The Korea, Vietnam and Gulf Wars list was compiled by soliciting known military families, newspaper notices and home visits. The purpose of this project is to recognize and honor the draftees, volunteers and those “called up” who served with honor to defend the country, constitution and flag to which they pledged allegiance: “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defined the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; so help me God."
